Death in Cameroon

Back in the 1880s, Germany made their attempt to colonize Central Africa. In order to get inland, they constructed railroads in the early 1900s. After Germany lost World War One, Cameroon was taken over by the French and English, who did no more Railway building.

So today, a train derailed and 55 people are dead, around 500 injured.

I do not understand French, but if you do you can fill in some gaps.

The train involved has a strict policy of no ticket, no ride. 600 tickets are sold, if you don’t have a ticket, the train runs only twice a week. But the nearby road was washed out by a storm – the first five minutes or so is describing the road problem. With the road unavailable, someone decided (maybe the mob) to cram the train as full of people as possible. With 1600 people instead of 600 and presumably a soggy roadbed, the predictable happened. With the extra weight and higher center of gravity, the cars tipped over. The train doesn’t show damage indicating speed – probably the dead were thrown out the doors and crushed by the cars.

So maybe America isn’t the worst place to live

* update – More history of Camrail and what it is like to ride a train

10,000 CFA (the currency in Central Africa) is about $16
