Is SiriusXM going to take over Pandora?

http://nypost.com/2016/12/02/siriusxm-reportedly-looking-to-snatch-up-pandora/

Pandora customizes the music it plays to you with advertisements customized to what the matrix knows about you. SiriusXM blasts mass audience music via satellite at everyone and doesn’t care if you listen or not, as long as you keep subscribing.

The third major flavor is “on demand”, where you tell the streaming service what yo want to listen to, but you don’t acquire any rights to listen to the song after your subscription ends.

So how do you blend those two products that are close to exact opposites? One possibility is to move distribution from satellite to IP based where you have access to the SiriusXM streams but with the ability to target ads? Would SiriusXM users tolerate that?

The big money people would like to unload Pandora. SiriusXM might not be the real prospect – how about Apple or Facebook?

No matter what, music listening by over the air radio has a problem. Truly local interactive content is the elephant in the room nobody wants to buy.

Pandora has always been interesting. I began with it many, many years ago in its infancy. It had a “cool” feel to it and the idea that I could listen to music in a genre that was similar to some music I seeded the stream with was an excellent hook. I did purchase music based on that hook and so there was some success. Eventually, I wanted to do more of an iTunes thing where I chose specific music to listen to. I guess Pandora has grown up since then 🙂

I’m not a music person, so my experience with pandora is fairly limited. The last time, the commercials in the free version were getting obnoxious. Last month the number of people listening went down. Spotify is the other big player.

There are ongoing disputes over royalty fees, and SiriusXM just lost again. Pandora actually owns one radio station in Souty Dakota solely for the purpose of claiming to be a radio company which they hope will give them a better deal

SiriusXM is combining with Chrysler and AT&T to create a product called SiriusXM Guardian. In the NWO vision of the future, your car (if you even are allowed to own one) will be online at all time as part of the Internet of Things

A little bit related – Uber pushed an update this morning requesting access to your location data even when you are not using the app. They state that while the app would then have continuous access, they will only actually use the data from when you request a ride until 5 minutes after the ride ends.

One of the problems uber has had in developing countries is fraud by drivers – drivers would create phantom riders that use new customer promotions to earn fares for people that don’t exist. If the ride ends and the phone of the rider doesn’t get out of the car and go somewhere, that could detect that fraud. It might also be useful for police to detect crime. Pretty soon the app will want full time access to the microphone and camera(s). For your safety, of course.
