Beck & Muse

Beck once again scores a victory proving that Media Matters doesn’t.  He regularly baits Media Matters by saying things during the show that sound totally bizarre if you take them out of context and don’t know the “game” he is playing.

Media Matters picked up a sarcastic joke Beck made about the band Muse – if you listen to his program, he has been playing their song warning about the encroachment of global government.   He said that he had just received an email from the manager of the group requesting that he withdraw his endorsement of the group.

Media Matters printed that as fact – and a flurry of media sources then reported it as fact (MTV, London Telegraph, and flurry of blogs that nobody reads) quoting Media Matters as the source, without attempting to fact check with the group or with Beck.   The Telegraph has now printed a retraction (kind of).

If you do a search on Beck and Muse and follow it down you come to one of two conclusions…either a lot of people listen to Beck, or a lot of news outlets just echo stories from each other without checking the facts.

so what’s true? i was listening to beck the day he praising muse’s music. after the break he came back saying that the muse agent or whomever had contacted him and asked for a retraction. sounded true to me. this was several weeks ago if not longer. he mentioned the ‘controversy’ again today, but never said that muse in fact had not asked for a retraction of beck’s endorsement.

i probably shouldn’t push ‘submit’ without reading what i wrote first

That begs the question… Is it possible for a musician to sue someone for libel or slander because they said they like your music?

I bet Beck made them bookoo money via CD sales. I have all their music now due to his recommendation and think it’s some pretty good stuff.
