Buckley Broadcasting (Website) is a privately owned company headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut. They own and operate 20 stations, the most signifcant being WOR in New York City – one of the oldest AM stations in the country. Buckley also operates the WOR Radio network, which syndicates programming for other stations.
WOR was one of the pioneers in Radio (and not part of RCA/NBC). They went on the air in 1922. After parting ways with William Paley in 1928 (the FCC made him choose between WCBS (then called WABC) or WOR). The owners of WOR (a department store) formed the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1934. The owner of WOR Merged with General Tire/RKO Radio (Howard Hughe’s company) in 1952. Buckley acquired WOR in 1987 when RKO Radio was forced to divest the station when General RKO was found to be requiring its dealers to advertise on their radio stations, a big no-no with the FCC. RKO’s loss was Buckley’s gain. Buckley was founded in 1956 by the father of the current President and ran a group of radio stations in Connecticut.
