Sun Aug 31st 2008
4:37 PM
Topic: Hurricane Gustav and the price of gas
Sun Aug 31st 2008

Comment: Obama "Seminar Caller" starts by greeting "Bob"... when corrected, he continued on with "I've listened to you for years".. (To the guest host)... and goes down an Anti-McCain list of talking points having nothing to do with the show
Sun Aug 31st 2008

Comment: My answer: Go out in your front yard, kneel down, kiss the ground and thank God you were born in the country that let you become wealthy. Pay the taxes on your deferred income and shut the hell up.

Sun Sep 7th 2008
5:30 PM
Topic: Retired government worker from Michigan asks if he should choose the option to pass along lifetime health benefits to his 24 year old daughter. Bob goes ballistic on the caller (and Michigan) at the insanity of that arrangement and the burden on future taxpayers and the caller chuckles and thinks "sucks to not be me".
Sun Sep 7th 2008
5:33 PM
=== Response ===
Conversation: It will suck to be him when the State is so broke it can't pay for anything. Michigan is already a basket case.
Sun Sep 7th 2008
5:55 PM
Topic: Pscyho caller calls in to tell Bob about his 2 year track record of predictions and calls Bob a "shill". Caller fails to get his web site URL mentioned.

Sat Sep 13th 2008
4:08 PM
Topic: Bob Brinker is working today!
More things to talk about than time to talk about them (Hurricane Ike and the effect on oil production, Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac...)

"Free market" Bob Brinker encourages government to "go after" price gouging and encourages his listeners to "report them"
Sat Sep 13th 2008
4:23 PM
=== Response ===
Conversation: If there are a line of people willing to pay the price, it is not "gouging"
Sun Sep 14th 2008
6:14 PM
Topic: Bob Interviews a member of the Federal Reserve Board about interest rates and assorted topics
Interview with a USA Today financial reporter about the Fannie Mae/Freedie Mac bailout
Sun Sep 14th 2008
6:15 PM
=== Response ===
Conversation: I missed the Federal Reserve interview - I wonder if he asked the guest "Who owns the Federal Reserve", to try to put to rest some of the conspiracy theories - not that any amount of facts would change any minds.
Sun Sep 14th 2008
6:17 PM
Topic: Merrill Lynch in merger talks with Bank of America, is AIG next?
Sun Sep 21st 2008
12:48 AM
Topic: The truth of the last week starts to come out. Money Market funds (which are not insured by SIPC or anyone else) but marketed as "really safe" - had exposure to a Lehman failure - investments the funds should have never made. That's why the Feds felt they had to step in.
Sun Sep 21st 2008
12:49 AM
Conversation: Bob is advocating bringing back the uptick short-selling rule, showing his complete ignorance of how electronic trading systems work. Following decimalization and specalists no longer manually controlling stock prices, subsecond price changes, distributed exections across multiple trading platforms, global trading of single stock futures, etc... the uptick rule makes no sense.

Bob's guest is absolutely correct, but Bob isn't going to accept the facts.

"Naked short selling" is a really bad idea as it is a positive feedback loop, that just feeds the downward panic. Short Selling itself is an essential protection against irrational price runups. Banning all short selling would be a really bad idea.
Sun Sep 21st 2008
1:00 AM
Conversation: One of Ronald Reagan's favorite sayings is "Subsidize something, you create more of something. Tax it, and you get less". I'm seriously worried that we are subsidzing failure. This new "fund" being created may cause banks and others to specifically target arranging their investments with the goal of dumping worthless assets into the fund.
Wed Sep 24th 2008
5:37 PM
Conversation: Can someone recommend a station that reliably streams the refeed of Bob Brinker's Moneytalk, or that streams a rerun of the show over the internet any time after 4 p.m. Pacific Time, on both Saturday and Sunday?
Wed Sep 24th 2008
9:42 PM
Conversation: Bob Brinker sells his program "on demand" on his web site, which is probably why few stations rebroadcast it.
Sun Sep 28th 2008
4:09 PM
Topic: Talking about the congressional deal to rescue the investment banking crisis.
Sun Sep 28th 2008
4:09 PM

6:38 PM
Topic: HYPO (German Real Estate Company) continues to unfold
Sat Oct 11th 2008
4:10 PM
Topic: Bob has a cold.
Bob stipulates that he completely missed this downturn.
Bob reviews the actions of Hank Paulson... Bob has concerns about the Federal taking preferred equity ownership in banks, causing the collapse of the common stock.
Q: Is my GNMA "safe"?
Sun Oct 12th 2008
5:01 PM
Conversation: Bob Brinker also sells a newsletter called Bob Brinker's MarketTimer which is a relatively expensive subscription service where he outlines various portfolios that you can model on your own.
Sun Oct 12th 2008
5:14 PM
Topic: Brinker says: The trouble with Tax Asset Relief Program is a conflict of interest. To please the banks, you must overpay for the assets you're buying to the banks which is bad for the taxpayer. But to pay a low value for these is bad for the banks' balance sheets. Solve this by injecting capital directly by obtaining preferred stocks and warrants in banks instead of buying the assets directly.
Sun Oct 12th 2008
5:27 PM
=== Response ===
Conversation: What's the end game for the preferred stock? Is it voting stock? Is it convertible? Is it cumulative? What's the exit strategy? Does the Fed get a role in setting lending policy for the bank? What rights do the common stockholders have after the Fed jumps of front of them in the event of liquidation?

What stops this "bailout" from just feeding the banks getting more and more irresponsible? Subsidize failure and you get more of it(tm)
Sat Oct 18th 2008
4:56 PM
Topic: Caller asks if the 700 billion rescue plan involves printing money?
Sun Oct 19th 2008

Sun Oct 26th 5:41 PM
Topic: Bob calls the next caller a liar (Caller is concerned that the government will take over 401(k) accounts to "protect" them).

Caller was concerned about the testimony in Congress, Bob's rejoinder was that callers concerns were not warranted because of a later interview with Neil Cavuto on a cable TV program nobody watches (and isn't under oath).

Sun Oct 26th 5:45 PM
Topic: Next caller passes along the bogus internet email saying the govt could spend the $85 billion and just give everyone $400,000 each to solve the mortgage crisis. Caller "didn't do the math" and Bob straightens him out. ($85 billion / 200 million is $400 each, not $400,000)

Sun Oct 26th 5:55 PM
Topic: Next caller challenges Bob on his assertion that the 'short sale uptick rule' is a major factor in company failures - quoting an article from The Economist (which indicates the caller is a really knowledgeable person in the investment industry).

Bob accuses the caller of being the operator of a hedge fund operator.

Bob is having a really bad day.
Sun Oct 26th 2008
5:58 PM
Topic: Next caller is concerned about countries going under and that rippling out to other things. Bob reassures him that only Iceland and Argentina are in trouble.
Sun Oct 26th 2008
6:01 PM
=== Response ===
Conversation: I guess that the Land of Critical Mass doesn't have newspaper service. Brazil, Pakistan and most countries in Asia are in serious trouble as foreign investment capital is fleeing their countries.

Sun Oct 26th 6:58 PM
Topic: Bob's guest blows off the Community Redevelopment Act as not being a factor in the failure of Freddie Mac / Fannie Mae. "All it said was banks had to loan to people where they have branches, not make loans to people who can't pay them back." Guest needs to spend an hour touring Detroit.

He also blames the repeal of Glass/Steagell on Republicans, despite it being pushed by Robert Rubin, the Senate approved it 90-8 and it was signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

Can we say "Democratic Party partisan"?
Sun Oct 26th 2008
6:53 PM
Topic: Next caller points out that the $2 trillion in US subprime is a very small portion of the global credit market, which the guest blows off, and Bob immediately corrects the guest (whose premise is that "Wall Street" is to blame). The global credit market based on LIBOR is over $300 trillion, so the subprime problem is less than 1% of the world's credit market. Caller pushes then to ask what the REAL cause is.

Comment: Now that Bob has critical mass and living in his gated community, he's turned into quite the Keynsian socialist. He now bristles at any suggestion that the government is out of control spending money it doesn't have. His favorite rationale lately is government should "give" money to people who have "a higher propensity for oonsumption".

Topic: Bob is defending his position again about the Short Sale Uptick rule. People who were watching things at the time saw no indication of mass short selling... The SEC has a rule that automtically prevents short selling if the open interest gets too high, and you can't short sell a stock below $5. The issue was that smart money knew companies like Lehman and AIG were sitting on 100s of Billions in losses. That's the reason the companies fall apart. Many of these stocks had a temporary prohibition on ALL short sales, and it did nothing to slow the fall of the stocks. Bob is full of crap.

Topic: Guest host: Bill Flannigan
Guest from Coldwell Banker is talking about the $8,000 tax credit for new home purchasers.
Guest from Coldwell Banker dismissed call from 37 year veteran in the Real Estate business with the cliche that "All Real Estate is local". Coldwell banker is a national franchise. The caller was talking about FHA's lending policies, which are not local. This was after Bill had hung up on the caller so he couldn't respond. Coldwell is just hyping Obama's plan.
Now guest after next call goes back and says "and the previous caller might have said this...". I'm really starting to get angry. This is the crap that is killing radio.

Conversation: *sigh* The Real Estate people never learn and the government just enables them. His company is pushing the idea that the 8k can be used as a "bridge loan" at closing... essentially reducing any down payment requirement by $8k... which may mean the buyer even walks away with cash - having paid nothing down. We haven't learned a damn thing yet. Then again, this is perfect for ACORN.

Look to Intrade as the basic model of how to place your bet make your investment.

Topic: Caller wants to know if she should be concerned that she owns a lot of State of California Bonds. Bob announces that he has a rule that you should not have more than 1% of your bonds in any one investment. [How convenient to announce a "rule" retroactively - Bob has previously said there is nothing to worry about investing in State bonds, since there has never been a default]

Capitalist Brinker "plays the child card", rationalizing going to a government payer system to protect the children of the irresponsbile parent. Bob is getting extremely defensive, and rightly so.

Comment: Bob explains to us illiterate people what is going on in Iran
Caller asks if she needs a lawyer to handle paying off her mortgage. Bob asks her questions about the profit and loss of selling the house - when she said nothing about selling her house - which confused the caller. Bob said that paying off a mortgage is "not a real estate transaction" and hence she doesn't need a lawyer. If the out-of-state lender fails to file a release of mortgage at the courthouse and later claims the mortgage wasn't paid off - she is going to have issues. Bob is not a lawyer - he should not be answering legal questions.
Bob gets question about why Wells-Fargo wanted Wachovia. Bob seems to be unaware that Wachovia owns the forme AG Edwards stock brokerage business and related mutual funds.

Comment: Caller has been sold $20k in Freddie Mac Preferred stock, and Bob obssesses over being called Bill (Half the time Bob is not there and Bill Flannigan is the guest)... rather than just correcting the caller, he makes fun of him and never does get around to telling the caller he may have bought a high risk, possibly worthless security from his broker.

Sat Jul 18th 2009
10:41 PM
=== Response ===
Conversation: AIG was stopped from failing because so many government employees have insurance annuities at AIG, AIG owed 10s of Billions to Goldman Sachs (Hank Paulson and Tim Geithner's former employe) and secondarily to create a pretext for Federal control and regulation of insurance, which is and always has been done State by State
