Looking at the map at least partially answers the question of why NATO doesn't embrace Georgia. Let's say NATO wanted to send help to Georgia. There are only two ways to get there (other than by air) - through Russia (obviously not going to happen) or through Turkey (not a member of NATO and Islamic country that probably won't be welcome to become part of "Old Europe")
