I see it slightly differently. His wife is a high priced lawyer working for the University of Chicago health care system. Perhaps his motivation was to limit the legal liability to the hospitals for botched abortions. I remember a case a while back of a botched abortion where the baby survived, but both arms had been cut off during the procedure... leaving huge legal liability for the abortion provider. Remember that doctors prefer to bury their mistakes.
