In June 2016, Omar Mateen, a 29 year old Muslim born in New York from Afghanistani parents legally bought a rifle and handgun. He was employed as an armed security guard and had previously been assigned to the county courthouse to screen visitors for weapons. He had worked at a prison for 6 months, completed his criminal justice degree and was hoping to be hired as a policeman. He entered a gay night club with the weapons and killed at least 50 people during a three hour standoff with police.
