

{"id":1220,"date":"2011-06-14T06:51:16","date_gmt":"2011-06-14T10:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=1220"},"modified":"2011-06-18T15:26:07","modified_gmt":"2011-06-18T19:26:07","slug":"how-much-is-a-station-required-to-be-on-the-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=1220","title":{"rendered":"How much is a radio station required to be on the air?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/ecfr.gpoaccess.gov\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=ecfr&amp;sid=2fe52bbc63af261ee436da5409204aa9&amp;rgn=div8&amp;view=text&amp;node=47:4.0.1.1.2.8.1.60&amp;idno=47\">http:\/\/ecfr.gpoaccess.gov\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=ecfr&amp;sid=2fe52bbc63af261ee436da5409204aa9&amp;rgn=div8&amp;view=text&amp;node=47:4.0.1.1.2.8.1.60&amp;idno=47<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This came to my attention because a station filed an application because they can&#8217;t afford to buy programming after 6PM&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h5>\u00a7\u00a073.1740\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Minimum operating schedule.<\/h5>\n<p>(a) All commercial broadcast stations are required to operate not less than the following minimum hours:<\/p>\n<p>(1) <em>AM and FM stations. <\/em>Two-thirds of the total hours they are authorized to operate between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. local time and two-thirds of the total hours they are authorized to operate between 6 p.m. and midnight, local time, each day of the week except Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>(i) Class D stations which have been authorized nighttime operations need comply only with the minimum requirements for operation between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., local time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nuances to the above language:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These are the rules for commerical AM\/FM stations, not non-commercial<\/li>\n<li>Class &#8220;D&#8221; are very small weak stations that few people care about<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Licensed Hours&#8221; refers to daytime-only AM stations &#8211; the number of hours per day they are licensed for changes each month based on the length of the day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the day is split into 3 parts &#8211; 6 AM to 6 PM,\u00a0 6PM to Midnight, and Midnight to 6AM.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You aren&#8217;t required to be on at all from Midnight to 6 AM<\/li>\n<li>You aren&#8217;t required to be on the air on Sunday (See that proves the Constiution says this is a Christian nation!!!!)<\/li>\n<li>Assuming you aren&#8217;t an AM daytimer, you have to be on 9 hours a day between 6 AM and 6 PM<\/li>\n<li>You have to be on the air 4 hours a day between 6 PM and midnight &#8211; so you can turn off the transmitter at 10 PM if you want<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From http:\/\/ecfr.gpoaccess.gov\/cgi\/t\/text\/text-idx?c=ecfr&amp;sid=2fe52bbc63af261ee436da5409204aa9&amp;rgn=div8&amp;view=text&amp;node=47:4.0.1.1.2.8.1.60&amp;idno=47 This came to my attention because a station filed an application because they can&#8217;t afford to buy programming after 6PM&#8230; \u00a7\u00a073.1740\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Minimum operating schedule.
