

{"id":1284,"date":"2011-06-16T07:13:40","date_gmt":"2011-06-16T11:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=1284"},"modified":"2011-06-16T07:13:40","modified_gmt":"2011-06-16T11:13:40","slug":"rapid-prototyping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=1284","title":{"rendered":"Rapid Prototyping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of Rapid Prototyping &#8211; which drives most corporations nuts.<\/p>\n<p>The basic idea is that it is impossible to know ahead of time what the best solution for a problem is going to be when you start.\u00a0\u00a0 Rather than spend 6 months carefully planning every last detail at endless meetings, whip together a prototype in a day or two with no formal design process.\u00a0\u00a0 Let people play with it and find out approximately what the right solution is.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If it doesn&#8217;t work, tear it up and start over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only once you have most people nodding their heads &#8220;Yes, that&#8217;s what I want!&#8221;, then you write down the formal design and do things like adding in rigorous edits and creating the documentation.<\/p>\n<p>The huge risk to this approach is the &#8220;customer&#8221; thinks the prototype is the real system &#8211; which you have to caution them before it starts.\u00a0\u00a0 The prototype probably can&#8217;t run fast enough to be real and lacks the test to make sure invalid data doesn&#8217;t come into the process.<\/p>\n<p>This approach is very anti-ISO 9001 unless you accept &#8220;Our process is there is no process&#8221; \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>So what that long winded prelude, here is today&#8217;s thing to draw up on the chalkboard.<\/p>\n<p>The starting point of any kind of &#8220;Bloat Meter&#8221; is I have to put things in piles so the similar things are together.\u00a0\u00a0 (&#8220;One of these things doesn&#8217;t belong with the other&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>There is my work so far this morning<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/adm\/player-type.php\">http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/adm\/player-type.php<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It should let you in &#8211; if not, just yell at me \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>This is most of the choices of the flavors of different players.\u00a0\u00a0 Using my normal convention, the column headings let you &#8220;Sort by&#8221; this.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sort by number you&#8217;ll find interesting, especially if you&#8217;re in the streaming business \ud83d\ude42\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Send me a ham for Christmas \ud83d\ude42\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Or if you work for SoundExchange, in which case send me a BMW \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>The general end game may go something like this, but I&#8217;m still not sure it is the right answer &#8211; allow people who are logged in to exclude specific players&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 similar to the way you exclude individual stations currently.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So you don&#8217;t want to see uStream streams?\u00a0 Poof, they&#8217;re gone.\u00a0\u00a0 (Did you know saying poof to an English person is offensive?)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of Rapid Prototyping &#8211; which drives most corporations nuts.
