

{"id":1473,"date":"2011-06-29T08:42:32","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T12:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=1473"},"modified":"2011-06-29T08:42:32","modified_gmt":"2011-06-29T12:42:32","slug":"radio-station-money-pit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=1473","title":{"rendered":"Radio Station Money Pit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nassau Broadcasting is a really sad story.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/johngalt.streamingradioguide.com\/blogradio\/?page_id=703\">Profile here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nassau from everything I can tell was a successful local radio station operator in Princeton New Jersey &#8211; but the owner got swept up in the merger mania and tried a failed attempt to go public in 2000 &#8211; followed by an acquisition binge in 2004 using money from Goldman Sachs &#8211; long after the party was over.\u00a0\u00a0 Nassau was the first of the significant radio operators to be seized by its banks.<\/p>\n<p>The stations they bought were incredibly worthless, which brings us to the story of WPLY-AM in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania.\u00a0 If you paste 41\u00b0 4&#8242; 41,-75\u00b0 23&#8242; 33&#8243;\u00a0 into your Google Earth, Google maps or the mapping software of your choice, that will take you to the location of towers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WPLY-AM is a Class D AM station.\u00a0\u00a0 Class D are the typical stations licensed since 1986 &#8211; their night time power is less than 250 watts and reasonable daytime power. (1000w\/24w in this case).\u00a0\u00a0 The station only covers the immediate area of Mount Pocono &#8211; the station simulcasts with another station in nearby Stroudsburg.<\/p>\n<p>So what makes it a money pit?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johngalt.streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wply-towers.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1474\" title=\"wply-towers\" src=\"http:\/\/johngalt.streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wply-towers.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"788\" height=\"705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wply-towers.png 788w, https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wply-towers-300x268.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 788px) 100vw, 788px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To create a directional daytime and nighttime signal, the station requires 4 antenna towers.\u00a0\u00a0 Nassau has just filed to shut off the station because &#8220;TECHNICAL WORK IS NEEDED TO DETERMINE IF THE STATION&#8217;S SEVERELY DETERIORATED ANTENNA SYSTEM SHOULD BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED.
