While it has some populist appeal, who is Carrier, and why are they moving to Mexico? There is a risk if you don’t understand the problem, you impose the wrong solution.<\/p>\n
Since 1979, Carrier has been a subsidiary of United Technologies, the military industrial conglomerate. Carrier operates in 40 countries, and employs 38,000 people worldwide. The Indianapolis plants employs 1,500 people. It is one of 40 manufacturing facilities in the United States.<\/p>\n
Carrier Statement on moving to Mexico<\/a><\/p>\n Since 1999, Carrier has operated a joint venture<\/a> with Toshiba, owned by Darwish Bin Ahmed<\/a>, based in the United Arab Emerates, which handles distribution of Toshiba and Carrier products in 67 countries. They employ about 8,000 people around the world.<\/p>\n Details<\/a><\/p>\n The first layoffs don’t happen until 2017 and are continuing until 2019. Laid off employees are being offered tuition to go back to school for up to four years. Not noticed is United Technologies is also moving 800 jobs from a nearby facility to Mexico that makes microprocessors for Carrier’s HVAC systems. The laid off workers are members of the United Steelworkers.
