

{"id":1524,"date":"2011-07-03T23:41:47","date_gmt":"2011-07-04T03:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=1524"},"modified":"2011-07-03T23:43:37","modified_gmt":"2011-07-04T03:43:37","slug":"linux-needs-a-microsoft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=1524","title":{"rendered":"Linux needs a Microsoft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google is the most likely candidate. \u00a0 Apple is an alternative.<\/p>\n<p>I draw your attention to the following picture (geek warning)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/temp.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1525\" title=\"Dependencies\" src=\"http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/temp.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"756\" height=\"558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/temp.png 756w, https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/temp-300x221.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Complex software has dependencies, and poorly designed (or unsupervised) software will have bizarre dependencies. \u00a0 \u00a0PulseAudio is a piece of software (this is Fedora 15 that came out in May).<\/p>\n<p>My logs are filling up with errors from PulseAudio, so I figure I&#8217;ll remove things that don&#8217;t have a purpose and see if that&#8217;s why it is complaining. \u00a0 I spot &#8220;Bluetooth Support for PulseAudio&#8221;, which allows bluetooth devices to access a music library. \u00a0 My desktop doesn&#8217;t have bluetooth, so that&#8217;s pretty logical. \u00a0 So I tell Fedora I don&#8217;t need Bluetooth support for my music library I don&#8217;t have.<\/p>\n<p>So it looks around and concludes that in order to not have bluetooth music support, it must completely remove Bluetooth support (not a big deal, but not logical), but it also must remove &#8220;Gnome-Shell&#8221;, which is a key part of the Graphic Environment. \u00a0 \u00a0This is roughly like going to your car dealer and asking how to remove the cigarette lighter and being told the only way to do that is to remove the engine!<\/p>\n<p>Being the kind of person I am, I said &#8220;Go ahead&#8221; to see if it would really do something that stupid.<\/p>\n<p>It was. \u00a0 Upon rebooting, the system would not start \u00a0 The Gnome Windows-like interface started, but would not login because there was no gnome-shell to do the login.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, I had to search using my iPhone to find out how to escape from an unstartable gnome desktop \u00a0(Ctrl + Alt + F2), get a command shell and reinstall gnome-shell manually.<\/p>\n<p>Every piece of software activated on a &#8220;standard&#8221; distribution (&#8220;distro&#8221;) is a potential security risk. \u00a0 I want nothing running on the system that isn&#8217;t necessary and it&#8217;s there for a reason. \u00a0Activating everything by default reduces confusion for getting the system working, but leaves a lot of dangerous junk sitting around.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google is the most likely candidate. \u00a0 Apple is an alternative.
