Her wealth came from the Post cereal fortune, and the accomplishments of her four husbands, the third of which was Ambassdor to the Soviet Union in the Stalin era in the 1930s, during which time they acquired many Russian art works.<\/p>\n When she died in 1973, her will left the estate to the US government with the intent of creating a permanent Southern home for the President of the United States. She probably had in mind John F Kennedy rather than Richard Nixon. In 1985, the government returned the unused property and the Post Corporation put the property up for sale.<\/p>\n A much younger Donald Trump purchased the property for $10 million. He and his then wife Ivana spruced the place up a bit. It now has 58 bedrooms and a 20,000 square foot ballroom. In 1995, Mar-a-Lago was changed from being Trump’s private residence to a private club.
