I want to share my curfew story.

We moved to North Carolina in the summer of 1970. In Pittsburgh, I had been selling newspapers on the street starting at the age of 10. After a while, I was given the better job of going to the movie theater on Saturday night to sell the Sunday newspaper early edition, mostly when the movie let out. That meant I often did not get home until well after midnight.

The day I turned 16 in Statesville NC, I got a job in a drive-in restaurant and started making serious money – $.90 an hour. Even though I was 16, I didn’t have a driver’s license, so I rode home on my bicycle, often after 1 am – labor laws said we could not work past midnight, but I didn’t object. Eventually I had enough money to afford to pay for my car insurance and my parents bought a new used car, and let me have the old 1962 Plymouth Valiant to drive to work.

At some later point, we made a trip back to Pittsburgh possibly for my eye surgery. We stayed with some old family friends who lived in Bridgeville and things were going along pleasantly enough and then “the siren” went off. Our hosts turned to me and announced that the siren was for the curfew. It was now illegal for me to go outside of their house, even out to our car. I asked why – is there some problem going on? The answer was that the curfew was longstanding and had been put in place to stop teenagers from getting into trouble.

I was appalled. That was the moment I decided I would never ever move back to Pittsburgh. In fairness, this was not a city wide policy, it was specific to this one borough. By that time, Bridgeville was an empty ghost town and the teenagers who used to do whatever they used to do were middle aged. But the curfew lived on.

In 2016, it still exists
http://ecode360.com/14257289

Last night the mayor of Charlotte imposed a midnight to six AM curfew over the entire city of Charlotte, not just uptown. There are relatively few exceptions. At least in the beginning, the police chief didn’t want a curfew. Just like the major employers telling employees to stay home, the curfew is a sign of fear and weakness, which will further empower the protestors / rioters. No people driving down the streets means no witnesses, nobody to help strangers who might get in trouble.

This has no direct impact on me, as I am unable to drive in the dark, but I am not happy. Maybe this will motivate people to send Jennifer to get a quick exit as mayor. She can move to San Francisco and live with her kind and be the superintendent of transgender bathroom safety.

Official order Each of us has different experiences in life.
