Unlike Burning Man, Coachella is a gathering place with hotels, running water, electricity and internet access.

Indio is on I-10 20 miles East of Palm Springs and less than 3 hours from Los Angeles and San Diego and about an hour from the far Eastern suburbs of Los Angeles. You can camp or take the RV to the desert, but driving back home is possible.

The Coachella Valley festival is held in the spring before the desert heat becomes unbearable. It competes with the South By Southwest (SXSW) for the attention of the Silicon Valley millionaires as a venue to network with their peers and have a good time. Coachella is focused on Music, SxSW more about technology, software and politics.

Desert Trip was a somewhat spontaneous idea, and many of the legends of Rock and Roll (those who haven’t died of drug overdoses) will gather for an event as least as profound as Woodstock. Attendees are expected to spend an average of $1000 to see and hear Paul McCartney, Neil Young, The Who, and others over a three day period. The concert is expected to bring in $150 million.

Desert Trip (NY times) On October 7th and the following weekend, the aging giants of Rock and Roll will be gathering at the Coachella Valley venue in Indio California for a once in a lifetime concert called Desert Trip.
