The cashew tree grows fruits and the cashew nut is at the bottom.  The fruit itself is edible and has an interesting juice apparently.  The cashew itself is hostile.  Inside the outer shell, there is a sticky substance the same as in poison ivy.  <\/p>\n<p>Processing them is extremely labor intensive and unpleasant &#8211; a perfect match with the available labor pool in Vietnam.  Vietnam is where most Cashews come from &#8211; India is the only close competitor, but that is largely for domestic consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The cashew tree was found in the Caribbean &#8211; it has no tolerance for frost and wants lots of rain and direct sunlight.  The global community has been pushing back on the use of &#8220;child slave labor&#8221; to harvest cacao pods used to make chocolate &#8211; primarily Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cashew Nut Processing - Peace Corps Ghana\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ky8omUFpxVI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Through some odd coincidence cashew harvesting in those countries just exploded in the past few years.   It takes about 5 years for a cashew tree to start bearing fruit.<\/p>\n<p>While West Africa is becoming a major grower of cashews, most are not processed there.  In the shell Cashews can last about 2 years without deteriorating, so they are being put on ships and sent to Vietnam from processing.
