They indicate a unauthorized person may have acquired the names, addresses. Credit card numbers and expiration date of it&#8217;s customers.<\/p>\n<p>When the people in the media read that, they think &#8220;hacked&#8221;, the same as when they heard the climategate emails were exposed. That was disclosed by Russian scientists who had authorized access. It wasn&#8217;t &#8220;hacked&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The wording of the Sony announcement strongly suggests the data was compromised by an employee or perhaps a contractor. Unless they are security morons, that data would be separated from the Internet by a dozen different mechanisms. On the other hand, the janitor who sweeps the floor at night&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The only piece of information they didn&#8217;t get was that secret code on the back of the credit card. Merchants are told in no uncertain terms that they should never write that code into any database, log file or any non-temporary storage. It should be transferred from where you entered it on the web directly to the message to their credit card processing firm and then wiped from the computer memory.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just a matter of time until our ability to use money is completely tied to a secure government issued device.
