and “how” was never resolved. The Soviets installed Kim il Sung (Generation #1) as the postwar leader of North Korea. North Korea followed the Soviet model for a Communist State and had a moderate amount of success recovering from WW II.

In 1949, after the U.S. “brought its troops home”, Kim saw a military option to reunify Korea, which gave us the Korean War, which ended in stalement that has lasted another 60 years.

Until the 1970s, Korea bounced between Russia and China, distancing itself from Mao and generally looking to Moscow for direction. Having sided with Moscow, when the USSR fell apart in 1991, Korea lost its way, and China was not very interested in dealing with Kim il Sun.

Kim il Sun, died in 1994. Kim Jon-il (Generation #2) took over from his father. Without help from the Russians and alienated from China, Kim #2 ignored the economy, and focused the country’s resources in propping up the military, creating a basket case, which depends on food handouts and the threat of making nuclear weapons to survive.

So now we have the third generation Kim John Un as its new leader. He’s only in his 20s, has only been involved with the government for about 3 years, and looks he he probably spent most of his life sitting on a couch playing video games.

It’s pretty obvious he is unprepared to be leader, but the “system”
