

{"id":3905,"date":"2011-12-30T06:23:56","date_gmt":"2011-12-30T11:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=3905"},"modified":"2011-12-30T06:23:56","modified_gmt":"2011-12-30T11:23:56","slug":"department-store-escalators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streamingradioguide.com\/startingover\/?p=3905","title":{"rendered":"Department Store Escalators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Department Store Escalators\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/83UYCFfd1g8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Motivated by the nostalgia of the Greyhound Bus thread, that motivated me to show this video &#8211; another of my childhood fascinations &#8211; riding department store escalators (mostly in Pittsburgh, but not exclusively).<\/p>\n<p>Before suburban shopping malls, people went downtown to shop.\u00a0\u00a0 Large cities typically had several large department stores that occupied an entire block, with maybe 10 or more stories of merchandise.\u00a0\u00a0 You typically had two ways to get to the upper floors &#8211; riding an elevator, with the operator calling out the merchandise on each floor as they stopped\u00a0 (&#8220;Floor 6 &#8211; Women&#8217;s clothing, coats, blankets &#8211; please watch your step&#8221;) or riding a series of escalators.<\/p>\n<p>For floors up higher, the elevator was faster, but the escalators had higher capacity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Often, the elevators would be split into banks, so if you wanted to go to the 8th floor, you could take the 6-12&#8217;th floor elevator and not have to stop at every floor (This was before automated elevators)<\/p>\n<p>As the comments note, these were decommissioned in 2004 &#8211; but extremely typical &#8211; the landings of each floor have the floor number, since it is easy to lose count.\u00a0\u00a0 The higher up in the store you got, typically the lower the capacity of the escalator, the older it was and the less maintained it was.<\/p>\n<p>This youtube video was related to another one describing the &#8220;wonderful&#8221; new escalator in Columbia to take people up and down a hillside:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Colombian slum gets outdoor escalator\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xqbpHRD33Pw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Motivated by the nostalgia of the Greyhound Bus thread, that motivated me to show this video &#8211; another of my childhood fascinations &#8211; riding department store escalators (mostly in Pittsburgh, but not exclusively).
