In the beginning, the city of Derby (CT) saw a pile of “free” Federal money to build a greenway. The Democratic mayor had a vision of the greenway being the foundation for the redevelopment of downtown, with all the century old vacant factories. The thing was built over the protests of the Republicans that it was a boondoggle and a waste of good money.

The EPA was brought in to clean up all the toxic waste that had been dumped in the area over the past 200 years, only to discover that almost all of it had long ago washed into the ocean.

So the Republicans won the Mayor’s race promising not to waste money. From the day it opened, the greenway has been wildly popular with the people who live here. The Republicans can’t get in front of cameras fast enough to take credit for “their” park.

Then the poop vigilantes showed up – people distraught over the idea that someone wasn’t picking up their dog poop. Let’s fine people if we catch those criminals! When that didn’t stop the poop, it was time to increase the fine to $250 – that will stop them for sure!

When that didn’t stop the poop, the mayor told the Parks department to have city employees pick up poop twice a week, to which the employees complained that was below their dignity as union members to deal with dog poop.

So today it’s wam enough to come out for a walk, and I look to see how the poop wars are coming. Not very surprising (especially if you’ve read my dog poop polls), the city now has two police on bicycles working the poop patrol. There are noticeably fewer people walking their dogs – for just having a dog makes you a criminal suspect.

Eventually someone will realize the big piles of poop are not from dogs, but that hasn’t sunk in yet. You will obey ze rules!
