You could have missed it, but the Southern Baptist Convention<\/a> just elected its first Black President.\u00a0 I’ve suggested before that this could be a great opportunity to peel away religious black Americans fed up with Barack Obama and his Marxist fellow travelers in the White House – not by trying to buy votes by giving away “more government stuff” but by going to very basic principles of right and wrong.<\/p>\n

It only took a few sentences to burst my bubble.<\/p>\n

“Well, no, no. I’m a man of the book. I believe in the word of God. I believe in the Bible. And God has specifically spoken about marriage. Marriage is between a man and a woman. You know, that’s biblical.”<\/p>\n

So which Bible are you reading?<\/p>\n

Pick up your Gideon Bible and open it to Judges 8:30<\/p>\n

“And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.”<\/p>\n

Gideon wasn’t just some obscure Hebrew citizen – he was one the Judges of the Hebrews who communicated directly with God, interpreted God’s law and is a Saint of the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

It’s pretty clear the Bible says that marriage is between a man and women – not men and men and women and women – but it in no way .will you find the Bible saying “Marriage is between a man and a<\/strong> woman”<\/p>\n

makes the best case possible that Christianity teaches monogamy because a few passages talk about wife rather than saying “wife or wives”.<\/p>\n

It would be 1000 more years after Jesus before Jewish rabbis would outlaw polygamy.<\/p>\n

I’m not advocating polygamy, but this notion that monogamy is “Biblical” is just completely wrong.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People just make up stuff “The Bible says [x]” because they know that most people won’t challenge them – not to mention the United States is not founded on Christian law, no matter how hard Glenn Beck squeezes the compass of George Washington.<\/p>\n

If followers of a religion refuse to perform marriages in the church for whatever the reason, or kick people out of their religion for getting divorced – that’s religious freedom – but governments are not religions and the legal system of the United States is based on laws passed by our Representatives, not something God whispered to someone in a dream 2500 years ago and the “emanations from a penumbra” that a Southern Baptist preacher tells his congregation in the revival tent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
