At the same time the US was involved in Civil War in the 1860s (with France encouraging the Confederacy), France was busy invading Mexico to try to collect on government debts owed to European banks.<\/p>\n
It’s a bit odd then that Cinco de Mayo has morphed into an anti-Anglo holiday rather than an anti-French sentiment. Once the US Civil War was over in 1865, the United States sent troops to the border with Mexico and forced France to withdraw its occupation.<\/p>\n
