Back during a period when the U.S. was under intense pressure, there was a slogan “Is this trip really necessary?” to get civilians to not “waste” resources during WW2.<\/p>\n
Here is my attempt at how to cut down the Federal government’s size:<\/p>\n
“The Federal Government should only be involved in those things that only the Federal Government can do”<\/p>\n
So the government should have the CDC – because infectious diseases don’t stop at State boundaries, and one state not controlling a disease problem will spread into its neighbors…\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 but the federal government should not be funding free health care clinics in poor urban areas – that should be done by states and cities\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (although you\u00a0might assert that unhealthy poor people are not that different than an infectious disease organism)<\/p>\n
Do away with Medicaid and do away with the Federal mandates on states to provide it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (“But if one state has good health care for the poor, it will become a magnet for poor people!”)<\/p>\n
Block grants for states are attractive because the Federal Governemt has the income tax and the ability to deficit spend.\u00a0\u00a0 States can’t print dollars, and state legislatures find it harder to raise taxes.\u00a0\u00a0 Block grants need to go (and their related strings).\u00a0\u00a0 If states think the spending is important, they have to find a way to convince their citizens to fund it.<\/p>\n
WIC – giving free milk to poor women should not be a federal program.\u00a0\u00a0 neither should free school lunches and breakfasts.\u00a0 Price supports for farmers….\u00a0\u00a0 Should the government maintain emergency supplies of food?\u00a0 FEMA – should the Feederal government really be in the business or rebuilding things after a hurricane – isn’t that what private insurance is for?\u00a0 States should repair the damage to their own infrastructure.<\/p>\n
