I didn’t believe it at the time.

A flaw with Java as originally conceived is that if it can’t interact with your real computer, it is close to worthless. As Java was expanded to allow “some” access to the real computer, that opened the door.

Java is now in the condition that they’ve decided it is impossible to block hackers, so they have started using the “Trusted Author” model similar to Microsoft ActiveX, where the author of a Java App has to be known and verified. You have the option then of whether you want to not run a specific app.

Exhibit One

You’ll be given this challenge (ironically the potentially unsafe app is the Front Page Hover thingy)

You have two options – accept the risk of running unsigned Java, or don’t run the app, and a choice to not ask for this app again. It’s a modal window – you can’t continue until you answer. When you say No, you get this:

Exhibit Two:

However, even if you clicked “Don’t show this again”, you get both popups again. This particular web site (URL is in the graphic) uses this button thing around 20 times – you get a pair of messages for each one that there is no escape from (unless you want to click Run, which defeats the entire point – since this could potentially be a fake popup designed to fool you into saying “OK” to mean “OK, give me malware”.

If you go to the Java Security settings (Control Panel) and tell it to NEVER run any unsigned java code, it still gives you two popups to inform you that it didn’t run the Java code. Thank you very much Sun…. errr… Oracle

Sheesh

In the beginning, the promise was that Java has “hacker proof” because it lived in a sandbox, and the Java Virtual Machine had no access to anything on the real computer, hence impossible to “hack” into.
