Steve Deace is one of the late night hosts on Salem Radio. He just wrote a column about that Duck show on A&E and lead with the fact that the United States is “A nation founded by pilgrims seeking out religious freedom…”<\/p>\n

The pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts in 1620 funded by English bankers to try to establish a trading colony. The crew and passengers included non-Christians.<\/p>\n
When they arrived at Massachusetts Bay, they were met by Squanto, the native American who curiously already spoke English. He had been living in England after being captured in 1605 by folks who would establish the permanent English colony in Jamestown in 1607 and returned to North America in 1616. The Dutch had started arriving at New Amsterdam in 1609 (today’s New York City). The Spanish had established Saint Augustine in 1565, 55 years earlier than the pilgrims, which you learn right away when you go there as a tourist… The Pilgrims were fleeing their protection they enjoyed in the Netherlands as the truce between Spain and the Netherlands was about to expire, and they feared God would not protect them from the Godless Spaniards. The charter granted by England for the colony specifically said it would not be a religious colony.<\/p>\n
By the time the Pilgrims arrived, Massachusetts was already being colonized by Catholic monks who had relationships with the native tribes. <\/p>\n
The Pilgrims founded the Plymouth Colony. That’s it. The Mayflower Compact is a nice historical document, but it doesn’t prove “The United States is a White Anglo Saxon Christian Nation”, which is the story Mr Deace is trying to weave.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
