A caller to a local radio show (it may have been a guest) expressed the idea that the US Gould prove we are going to uphold Internstional Law and not allow Russia to destroy Deoicracy of our friends in Ukraine – by sending an Aircraft Carrier into the Black Sea. How would we react if Russia sent an aircraft carrier into Lake Michigan?

The Black Sea is not the ocean and “international waters”. It’s an inland sea and home to Russia’s Naval Base. To get to the Black Sea, you have to travel through the narrow Bosporos straits, go through a lake and go through the Dardinelles.

Access to the Black Sea is restricted by an International Treaty that specifically prohibits aircraft carrying ships in the Black Sea other than by countries bordering on the Black Sea. The rules of using the sea are governed by the Montreax Convention.

Even if it wasn’t illegal, it’s a pretty boneheaded idea. It would trap the aircraft carrier with no escape route. It would throw the US and Rusia into direct military confrontation. If we sink the Russian Navy, it’s time for the Russians to fuel up the ICBMs.

Turkey is holding the keys here. They control access to the Black Sea and are a member of NATO and o have a credible military independent of NATO.
