With Diversity being the buzzword of the day over at the FCC, I chose Radio One as the first “Big Radio Owner” on which to create a company profile. Radio One is owned by a black woman (and her son). The report is pretty complete now, to the extent that anything on the internet is ever complete.

Radio One and its owner were very supportive of the election of President Barack Obama. You might remember the confrontation during the election between Hillary Clinton supporter Tavis Smiley and Obama supporter Tom Joyner on Joyner’s morning show – whose production company is owned by Radio One. Joyner warned Tavis in blunt terms that he was on the wrong side of history, and “The Community” has a very long memory.
Radio One owns a few more than 50 radio stations, which are all targeted at African American communities, with young and adult urban music, gospel and inspirational religious music, and Urban News/Talk.
Comments are enabled (but do require registration because of spambot issues) if you see mistakes, something is not clear, or there is information you think would be of general interest to visitors but is missing from the article. I would like to use this article to create the prototype for the rest of the company descriptions.
It’s apparent that creating these will be time-consuming, so the more the volunteers test, the more time I can spend on gathering reliable information to create these documents, which I hope will have enduring value in documenting how the radio business got where it is, what is happening now and looking at the future.
