News Corp vs Internet – Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp will begin charging for its internet content, and related to that he intends to force Google to drop even showing the headline and the first snippet of the story in Google News. (News Corp now owns the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and Marketwatch)
Call me crazy, but I don’t think this is going to help News Corp……
Murdoch seems not totally opposed to the idea of the government taxing people to fund news gathering (the BBC model)
From the article: “[They use] a doctrine called fair use, which we believe can be challenged in the courts and will (sic) bar it altogether.” They think they can ban fair use? Seriously? Fair use is an established practice that has been around for a very long time; it’s the compromise between the First Amendment rights to free speech and the copyright protections afforded in Article I of the Constitution. Mr. Murdoch (who, need I remind anyone, is not a native of the United States) has no chance of finding a judge that is willing to overturn that doctrine.
