Abacast v4 has arrived – it looks to be a Flash based player. Flash is really ending up the dominant player for streaming – the long term winner of Apple and Microsoft fighting with each other.

I despise Flash. With WMP, RealAudio, MP3, etc. you had a feed. You could go directly into the media player and play the audio feed as it originated from the server.

Flash, on the other hand, is scrambled and protected to prevent this. You cannot listen to most feeds without using a bulky flash player. That, of course, makes the user captive to prestream ads and any other junk they desire. I remember when StreamAudio developed their system and actually touted this! Never mind how much of a pain in the endside it is.

There is a major collision about to happen – the radio guys have been going to the model of forced prestream ads (or the more benign injected ads during on-air breaks)… while the consumers are rushing to cell phones that need the raw feed. The compromise at the moment is the owner specific app – iHeartRadio (Clear Channel), iRadioNow (Beasley), Public Radio (NPR)… or the catch as catch can aggregators – Radilicious, live365, shoutcast, wunder radio…

There is a “standards” group meeting in January in Las Vegas to push the idea of a standard method of “stream discovery” so that all of the independent databases become not needed… that either means the end of this directory or that 90% of my time gets freed up to work on schedules rather than testing streams… or the whole idea might flop. I see Clear Channel finally has a member in a leadership role, but no other american radio company or streaming company. The entire concept is the opposite direction they’re all heading. Hold on tight.
