OK, I was wrong. I guess Curtis didn’t like being kicked around like a soccer ball around the WABC schedule and had enough. I also read that Curtis says he will never work with Kuby again, so scratch that idea.
As for Bennett… I don’t know what to think. Morning drive has never been all that popular for syndicated shows; Bennett was never much more than a filler for stations who wanted to say they had “conservative talk” in the slot but couldn’t afford a local host, or overnight filler on the West Coast (though Doug Stephan has a fairly large foothold out there). It’s probably not much skin off his back, but there seem to be more shows coming out for that time slot lately, so I have to wonder how much longer Salem will keep him around if they won’t even air him on their own stations.
There have been big shakeups in the last week at Salem. They got some breathing room on the debt load, and I smell change in the air. The news/talk side is being operated like a hobby or something…. Hewitt and Prager basically seem to just follow their nose and talk what they feel like talking about. I’m not at all “pro consultant”, but they are both dreadfully uninteresting shows. Medved could be interesting, but Salem doesn’t syndicate him beyond their own stations. He basically talks to the same dozen or so callers, and he seems to favor callers for which he can make an extended debate for an entire segment. Bennett puts me to sleep – the quiet monotone voice and the subject matter…. but he does seem to have at least some audience. In summary, someone at Salem needs a kick in the butt to tell them they’re wasting their talents.
