W00t! Don Imus is gone from WELI startin…

W00t! Don Imus is gone from WELI starting next month, and returning to local programming. Imus can still be heard from New York on WABC (for now)… WELI is my local news/talk radio station that has had *zero* local programming during the week for about 2 years…. I suspect the “local” guy will actually be in Hartford, an hour’s drive away… we’ll see…. Imus is already scrubbed off the WELI web site…

That, or you get Quinn and Rose. Knowing Clear Channel… I wouldn’t be surprised.

Well, they have named the new host – he’s a music jock who used to work with Glenn Beck, I think. It seems really unlikely that he’ll be able to rebuild a morning audience. The pre-Imus guy made the mistake of directly confronting the Mayor of New Haven over making the city a Sanctuary City for illegal aliens. He should have paid attention to where Clear Channel’s headquarters is and how many spanish language stations they own.

Quinn and Rose actually have no traction at Clear Channel…. I don’t even know how they have a show :)… It’s not syndicated by Premiere, and they’re on Sirius/XM gasp!). Most of the affiliates I know of are not Clear Channel.

But they seem incapable of thinking like a national show… they still slip up and mention the hour when they talk about the time, and make lots of references to where they are, as if people in Texas would care about Saint Bernard’s church in Mt Lebanon or some event out at a store in a strip mall. They’ve been doing this long enough that they should have figured this out by now. They seem content to just be a regional morning drive show on a handful of stations, and that’s fine. Pittsburgh has always been a very insular community, pretty much unconcerned what lies beyond the next mountain.

Yale University is one of the main employers and influences in this area – Rosa DeLauro is my Congressperson, and she has a job for life….. the other main news/talk station is Cumulus WIIC – it’s a local focused station much more in tune with the local population – very pro-union, progressive, etc… and regularly has the local and state politicians on the air… basically nobody in elected office in the state would appear on WELI… the governor is a Republican (RINO), but I don’t think she felt “safe” talking to the host – he would try to force her to make statements about her position on immigration, and put her in conflict with the mayor of New Haven…. so that was that….

Case in point – today Rose is out doing a local remote from a VW car dealership in the Pittsburgh area.
