Polka musicians are a totally different breed. To them, anything sounds good in 2/4 time with an accordion.
As for playing it… three types of people I can think of: 1) polka junkies who think the same way as polka musicians, 2) people who play that kind of stuff as a huge joke (e.g. me), or 3) Dr. Demento.
Judging by the time this was posted, I’m guessing it was #1. I’m beginning to see why polka is relegated to the same time slots as public affairs shows. I enjoy a good polka every now and then, but… that just goes too far.
It was a polka show – my guess is he slipped it in for the “Peace” / Christmas connection but it was beyond awful. The song is in 3/4 time (or is it 6/8?) and you can’t play it with 3 chords :) It just isn’t possible to play as a polka. The intro didn’t suggest it as a gag song, although I did.
