Power outages in Florida – one of the radio stations I was testing mentioned that school has been called off for today – in order to try to reduce the power load on the electric grid in Florida. Since cold weather is fairly rare in Florida, to the extent people have heating in their house, it is electric, not natural gas or oil.
The news at the top of the hour is starting to report power outages across the state. Florida is probably also having trouble buying power from neighboring states….Summer is when Florida has heavy demand for electric power for air conditioning – it’s likely some of the generation plants in Florida are out of service for regular scheduled repairs during the periods of lower demand for power.
Station in Tampa Bay (southern Florida) reports widespread problems with people having frozen pipes…

A tip from my North Carolina days – NC gets freezing weather only once in a while, but not enough to heavily insulate homes. If you have uninsulated pipes in your house, leave a small trickle of water running overnight (be sure the stopper isn’t in the sink! :) The movement of water should be enough to prevent the pipes from freezing

The power co over in my hometown (Perry) notified their customer today to cut back on their usage in order to prevent possible brownouts.
