Did any of you guys see the story on Bec…

Did any of you guys see the story on Beck’s tv show Friday re the Japanese guys who were trying to smuggle 134 billion of Treasuries into Switzerland (in a suitcase) two weeks ago and got caught by the Italian police? He had on a Scripps-Howard reporter who had spent the entire day trying to run it down and got nowhere. Beck said Fox newsroom also got nowhere with the Dept. of the Treasury, Secret Service, Japanese government, etc. Have any of you seen this story on any other tv news shows? (I watched Lou Dobbs tonight and they didn’t have it.) Seen it in any newspapers in your areas? (I’m in the Philly area — didn’t see it in the Inquirer.)

Saw it. Beck has been on fire lately. If he isn’t pissing me off about something, he has me in stitches. Same with the radio show. I do hope he wears a flak jacket when he goes outside though.

Thanks. But, beside Beck, have you seen/heard it on any other news outlets, either tv, radio or print?

I heard about it on Twitter a few times over the past week. That’s it.

Back on June 12th (three days before Glenn’s first mention on the radio), I created a poll question on this subject: Vote Here

I saw a brief mention of the story on Free Republic last weekend, but at this point I can’t decide if it’s hype or real…regardless, it’s a fascinating story and Glenn does have a way of getting your attention.

There are places in the world where U.S. currency is counterfeit, and everyone knows it is – but the prestigue of the U.S. dollar enables it to still be the defacto local currency. I wonder if these fake bearer bonds serve that purpose. I think if I had a piece of paper that I paid $500 million for, I would look at it closely. One report said they are from 1934, but that the U.S. didn’t have bonds that big in 1934. The two questions that come to mind as the biggies are…. how did this story surface in the first place? What was the motivation for telling the world about it?… and why did they let the 2 guys go?…. Glenn alluded to the notion that the point of this may have been to try to destablize the dollar and start a stampede. Imagine if FDR had been issuing bonds to other countries that were completely “off the books”… In 1934, the likely suspect that comes to my mind is the Soviet Union.

Thanks, Art, for the link to the Bloomberg story. Liked your spin on the date of the bonds and the Ruskies.

You asked a great question re who wanted the story out and why. Can’t wait to see where it goes over the next few days.
