Rush is fading fast…. or Glenn Beck is…

Rush is fading fast…. or Glenn Beck is rocketing upwards…. today, Beck’s listen counts were 44% higher than Rush….(and the day isn’t over for Beck) Laura Ingraham is getting within range of Rush’s numbers… perhaps he overplayed the Rahm Emanuel/”retard” thing?

Do people really like Laura Ingraham that much? She probably isn’t in the top 20 for me.

Well, one aspect of this web site – people frequently come here to find shows that are not on a station in their own town, but they have heard about. Quinn and Rose (for example) are not in the top 10 nationally, but they look like that here – because people had found them on XM (truck drivers come to mind) and go to find them on “regular” radio and wind up here.

Laura’s was one of my favorite radio shows until a few years ago when Salem(?) replaced her with the dimbulb loser gallagher….

It would be interesting to see the national ratings numbers for Rush today compared to say 5 or 10 years ago when streaming and/or satellite radio was not readily available…

Rush long ago reached total saturation – there isn’t a place in the United States you can’t hear Rush – so any growth has to come from getting more people listening in each market…. and there isn’t any significant competition during those three hours since O’Reilly left… Fred Thompson has been a fizzle… Trying to count up all the individual stations numbers (many of which are in markets without Arbitron ratings) is an imprecise science, but Rush doesn’t mention them much any more…. He’s still the big guy on AM radio (and starting to migrate to FM)…. but Beck has the momentum…

i listened to an old Art Bell show the other day and he mentioned Gordon Liddy as a competitor at the same time he was mentioning Rush(this was around 1996) – did Liddy ever have that many stations because i notice now he’s got less than 10 (although im not sure if Radio America has others that are carrying Liddy)?…

He was very big back in the mid-1990s, mainly in the hot-talk market. Westwood One had him paired with Imus– Imus 6-10am, Liddy 10am-3pm. He faded by 2003, and WW1 dropped him in favor of the first attempt to syndicate Joe Scarborough.

Yeah, Liddy’s only a few affiliates shy of joining the list of 1990s talk relics such as Mary Matalin and Chuck Harder. I’d add Jeff Rense to that list but he’s still hanging by a thread as I understand it.

Is this just a rise in the number of people listening to the radio?

All of the people whose jobs were not saved by Obama sitting at home all day? :)

I can only measure the number of people streaming who arrive through here…. in the case of Limbaugh, there is very little of that caused by people living in places where he isn’t on the air (a lot is people who are listening at work and can’t get radio signals inside their building)… so it’s probably a relatively reliable trend line. If you pull up the ratings graph for a show, it has two options set by the checkbox – one way shows you the raw numbers, the other “normalizes” the numbers to take out the effect of growth so you can compare apples to apples and see the overall share….
