WXKS-AM is mocking their new lineup – the new Clear Channel home for Conservative Talk in Boston is looping a promo announcing the arrival of Conservative Radio at noon – comparing Rush to your crazy uncle, and Glenn Beck to George Noory talking about alien abductions. It’s all done by a smarmy “big radio announcer” voice who has not an ounce of sincerity in his voice.

WRKO has made numerous mistakes over the years, but taking Rush off at noon and replacing him with Charlie Manning is one of the worst. While Manning has both Scott Brown and Gov. Deval Patrick on today, what will he do tomorrow?

I think the root problem here may be that Rush has overplayed his value. Premiere has to charge so much to cover his contract that stations are getting to the point they are saying “Sorry, we can’t afford this program any more”…. advertising is off nationally around 20% and only slowing starting to come back (a chunk of that is probably US Census ads)

The way Clear Channel handled this suggests they were caught by surprise – or if it was they who iniitiated the move, then they are “winging it”… a former Rumba spanish music station at 1200 is not going to be a place people expect to find Rush.

It’s also interesting that they are starting at Noon and not 9 AM when Glenn Beck is on the air.

The station (at least for now) will be running Rush reruns from 6-9 AM, which may draw a streaming audience. I doubt they even have a workable studio to do a local show.

They were about 3 minutes into the show before he and Senator Brown decided to talk about college basketball. That’s when I clicked the “Off” button.

The smarmy voice is Ed McMann (yes, that’s spelled right), Clear Channel’s seemingly ubiquitous voicetracker and disc jockey who’s based in Boston.

As for a studio, they could in theory share studio space with the other Clear Channel stations in Boston, but it’d require one of the two FMs to go to voicetrack or syndication in the morning.

    • Art Stone says:

Good local talk radio needs a studio setup for in-studio guests – mulitple microphones, a table… looking people in the eye gives lots of information that you miss doing phone interviews – not to mention the occasional fist fight
