For the most part Paul is right of center, which certainly does not make him a “right winger.” I agree with him on several issues but strongly disagree with him on others. As far as Paul’s political orbit is concerned, I see him not as a right winger but as an eccentric.

I’ve voted LIbertarian a couple times, but there are some big gaps between the Libertarian platform and Ron Paul’s (or the people in the Tea Party). Libertarians generally believe in “hands off” by the government on economic issues – that humans should be free to travel and work in the place that generates the most wealth – in other words, Open Borders. Paul is saying that in his 2008 platform, but also is saying we need to Secure the Borders – from what? He wants to end the War on Drugs. If tomorrow, all drugs were made legal, would the flow of drugs across the Mexican border stop?

Libertarians also believe it is up to us what we do with our bodies (but also up to us to pay for the consequences). Paul is an Ob/Gyn and says he wants to overturn Roe v Wade. Since few people seem to actually know what Roe v Wade said, that statement might be a bit slippery. The Libertarian Pro-Life thought process is that the fetus owns itself, and the mother has no right to take away the fetus’s property (aka its chance at being born)

By the time a person graduates from high school – if they attended public school – “we” have spent upwards of $100k providing that “free” public education, only a portion of which was paid by the parents (if that much). For people to actually “own” themselves, we also need public schools to charge tuition covering all the costs. Then if you decide to wrap your car around a phone pole at 100 mph, our “investment” isn’t destroyed.

He wouldn’t have sat on the left side of French parliament around the time of the Revolution, so by default he’s a Rightie. Thomas Sowell talks in one of his books about how the tag Right-Wing doesn’t actually mean anything beyond not being a left-socialist, which is why it lumps together completely opposed views like libertarianism and Fascism.

I’ve voted and supported RP for a number of years now. Who did you find that called him a ‘Right-Winger’? Just about the only place you will find him on TV is left-wing shows. Ron Paul is pretty much banned from FNC at night. Myself I find Right-Wing people who go off the rails when I mention his name.
I would call RP a practical Libertarian. I know he is a ‘states rights’ guy. So since he would overturn Rowe v Wade, the states would have the final call. The Foreign Policy is a mess at the moment, we run around playing world cop and can’t keep folks from invading our borders. Domestic spending & Foreign spending, it’s got to stop! We are going broke! Legal Drugs? I had a problem with this Art. I sent a letter off to RP asking that if this was done could I still enforce a drug free work zone? Answer yes, it’s my buisness. Again, states rights?
We have to get off this path we are on, and until someone else comes along Ron Paul gets the nod. I don’t see Palin right now & No way do I support Mitt Romnebama.
Okay I’m through with the soapbox…..(Chuckle)

I tapped out that note following a guest on John Batchelor’s show using that label and John agreeing. A bit of the confusion is related to whether the “Tea Party” movement is an extension of the Ron Paul 2008 campaign.

I agree with the statement up above that in the simplistic view of the media, anything that is opposed to big government social democracy must be “right wing”… Just as people who buy guns and support military force are “right wingers” – ignoring Fidel Castro, Daniel Ortega and Hugo Chavez just off the top of my head.
