Verizon iPhone coming in January

Bloomberg is reporting that Verizon will start selling the iPhone in January. AT&T’s phones are based on GSM, which is the global standard. Verizon uses CDMA, which is basically only used where the US Government has a military presence – so you won’t be able to use your existing AT&T iPhone to switch to Verizon.

If I’m on the 99.00 a month plan, Verizon, why is my bill 187.63? Next week, Boost Mobile (Motorola i1) 50 – 60 $/ month for real. Can’t wait to cancel my contract (70.00). To profit by lying is stealing – Verizon is scum – I’ll never sign a phone contract again.

How many times is this rumor going to be news? I refuse to believe it until Apple announces it or there is a leak from the factory.

So far Bloomberg is standing behind their story. The thing that might be missing (but indirectly alluded to in the story) is it would make sense – if they are creating a non-GSM phone – that it would be LTE based. LTE is a standardized 4G wireless protocol that Verizon is rolling out in November. LTE has the bandwidth to allow the use of the videophone feature without relying on WiFi.

Sprint has a 4G network up already in major cities, but it is based on WiMax, a competing standard. AT&T is expected to also use LTE for 4G which gives Sprint only a small window to establish that WiMax is better. If the Verizon iPhone is LTE based, that’s not good news for Sprint.
