Odd… middle aged overweight white guy…

Odd… middle aged overweight white guy rings my doorbell, says he is with Comcast, starts asking questions about how the cable is routed through the building, and when challenged can’t produce a Comcast photo ID. (The cable TV junction box for the entire building is on the wall about three feet from my bedroom window – several people were there around noon talking to each other while I was trying to sleep)

What, me paranoid?

Can’t be too careful. There was a “security alarm” company selling door to door in my area. Turned out they were ripping people off. They were very pushy and asked very improper questions about current security of the home. If you declined to buy they made veiled threats that “break ins were happening all around your area and you could be hit anytime”. It felt more like extortion than a sales pitch. I’m glad they were run out of town before they ripped too many people off. This kind of stuff is going to get a lot worse. Welcome to USSA.

One of my pet theories is that companies that sell termite protection drive around in the middle of the night dumping nests of termites off the back of pickup trucks.

It’s not a big secret that companies that sell anti-virus protection software employ staffs of hackers who know how to create a virus (but who are “reformed”). There is lots of money in scaring people, especially if you run a government..

My best guess is this guy is the son (or friend) of someone who lives in the complex trying to figure out how to steal the cable service. Someone was banging on the box again today, but I was too asleep to be interested. My backup theory is someone reported me to flag@whitehouse.gov and I was being “investigated”. :)

But I agree with the general notion that if society begins to unravel, sensing who you can trust and who you can’t can become a matter of life and death. One of the benefits of condo living is they always have little old ladies with lots of time on their hands to just watch what is going on outside all day.
