The Washington monument and God

Glenn made the point at least 3 times that the East side of the Washington monument contains the engraved words “Laus Deo” as evidence of the country being rooted in the Christian/Judaism religions.

Glenn would do well to check with Snopes

As Glenn himself pointed out, the monument was finished in the late 1800s after the Civil War.   At most, the words are a reflection of the thinking of the people alive 100 years after the founding of the country who were tasked with building the monument.

The Snopes article mentions that George Washington never referred to Jesus Christ in any of his writings.    The “Prayer” attributed to him was not written by Washington and did not originally contain references to Jesus.

Much of what we think we know about George Washington was written by Parson Weems in The Life of George Washington,  Weems waited until Washington was dead to publish the biography, based largely on hearsay, not confirmable sources.  It’s harder for a dead man to say “What you said about me is not right”.   An 1858 copy of the book is readable online at Google Books.   You’ll see it contains no footnotes – it is not a scholarly work – it is not a history book – it is a story told by Pastor Weems and his opinions of Washington..

You can’t see the words “Laus Deo” on the monument.  They are on the outside and too high above the ground to be seen and facing upwards (towards Deo).  Even Glenn’s super powered vision can’t see them, though maybe his imagination and his mind’s eye can see them.

It’s not an accident that the word chosen was “deo” and many of the founding fathers were deists.   Deism is not based on revealed knowledge of prophets.   It’s bizarre that Glenn keeps talking about the Enlightenment in Europe, while describing it as the opposite of what it actually was.   Lock him in a room for a month and force him to read Voltaire.
