Where have the good men gone?

The Wall Street Journal asked last Saturday here

The article itself is little more than a rehash of things asked by women like Mareen Dowd of the New York Times – running out of time to become mothers and wives and wondering why there are no good men in America.

The comments are up to 68 pages.     It isn’t Youtube 13 year olds snping at each other, but a serious exchange by adults – almost none of which supports the theme of the story – that “guys” are afraid to grow up and become “men”.

This is not just some random cultural change.  It is deliberate strategy.   Progressives want people to not form traditional family units and have children (except for themselves, of course).

I was born in 1955 and hit right at the peak of when all the rules were changing about how men and women interact in our society.   Along the way, the things I learned:

  • TV taught me that men are stupid, unprincipled, corrupt and ignorant, and that women are implicitly moral, virtuous, and intelligent – incapable of doing evil – especially if they are Whoopi Goldberg
  • The Supreme Court told me that decisions about having children are entirely the woman’s, and men have no say in reproduction – but all of the responsibility to support the children
  • Marriage is a temporary arrangement while children are conceived that can be dissolved without a reason – and the man will pay to support the family while being excluded from paricipating in the lives of the children, since men are only a negative influence anyhow
  • When a couple have a domestic dispute, the presumption is that the man is at fault, even if the physical force was initiated by the woman
  • The woman saying to the police “I’m afraid he might hurt me” is enough to send a man to jail and acquire an arrest record that will affect his future employability – never having done a thing to harm the woman.
  • Being married is no longer a defense against a claim of rape
  • Marriage is an institution that enslaves women
  • Religion is a patriarchal institution used by men to control women
  • Men are expected to go fight wars at 18 and risk death, but can’t be trusted to drink a beer or put salt on their food
  • Women want a man to be strong and dominant – until they are
  • Boys in school who start acting like alpha males must be drugged into submission
  • MTV teaches that the ideal living arrangement after school is you go live together with a group of strangers in a house on the beach and your job is to have random sex and enjoy doing nothing useful for society – until you realize that you’re all gay and gain virtue
  • Gay men are not only equal, but have all the inherent superior virtues and characteristics of women
  • The role of Colleges is more important than just being a  place for men and women to find marriage partners – social activities promote group activities, not “dates”
  • Marriage is an arrangement between any two people that love each other, and has nothing to do with families and procreation
  • Men are responsible for paying the expenses of all children (through taxation) independent of their role in creating or raising those children

So what’s the mystery here?    Men will become what society demands that they be.  So as the article points out, 55% of people 25-29 have never been married.   The percentage of under-55 households consisting of one non-married person with no children is rapidly increasing.   We are on the same path as Europe where the society is destroying itself by not having children.  Nature abhors a vacuum.    Another culture where men are dominant and women are submissive baby factories WILL fill the void.

When men hear the message “I admire you, I respect you, our relationship is forever, and I trust you and you can trust me, and the needs of our children are more important than my need to have a career” and the law and the culture back that up….  then maybe the men will show up as husbands and fathers.  Right now,  all the incentives are on the side of men just remaining “guys”, sitting around playing Angry Birds on their iPhones.

Art, BRAVO!! In my humble opinion this is the best post I’ve seen you pen yet.

I was born in 1956, was raised Catholic, have been married (to a WOMAN) for 33 years, completed engineering school, paid back all my student loans, have two responsible sons, and have been the sole provider for my family throughout. I also put in about 1000 hours a year in volunteer community service (my wife puts in twice that). It hasn’t been easy swimming against the tide of ‘normalcy’ all these years. But I still have a house, an intact family, and very manageable debts while many of my peers are declaring bankruptcy and watching their marriages collapse for the 2nd or 3rd time.

I’m glad you brought this topic up Art. And I really don’t know where to start, but I’ll try.
I’m 3 years older than you, and I’m SO GLAD I’ve been married going on 28 years now. To the same woman.
All my life I’ve been hearing women complain about this topic. But then they’ll say the last guy they dated was immature, didn’t make good money, and had nose-hairs. What they are really saying is they are whinning, controlling women who dress for each other, and not to get a guy. And of course as soon as they “hook” the guy they figure they will “change” him later. No wonder why divorce rates are through the roof!
The guy heard them telling him he was immature basically because he was interested in other things than they were (like football, not shopping). The guy heard them tell him how much they spend on themselves, and how their girlfriends all have richer boyfriends, and the guy figures there will always be money problems going forward. The guy hears the woman ragging on him about what he wears and his grooming habits, and hearing this the guy is looking at the woman with short hair, wierd make-up, and even weirder clothes, and wonders why he lowered his standards just because she was easy to talk to.
The young guys are no prizes either. Society has left the young man with very little options on how to live his life, and over 50% of these men didn’t have a role model in the house due to divorce.
“Another culture where men are dominant and women are submissive baby factories WILL fill the void.”
Are you talking about a specific culture, OR MAYBE A RELIGION, here? Let me take a guess ……
What’s also very disturbing to me is a lot of young married couples aren’t having children any more, because “who would want to bring kids into this world?” Maybe 13 years in the public school system listening to the politically correct crap they were dishing out has been a causitive factor in this.

After I moved onto sneering at Savage’s military illiteracy again, Thelma and Louise came to mind, as well as the woman who soaked her “abusive” husband while he was sleeping with gasoline and lit him on fire in “self-defense” and how the feminist establishment rallied around her to get her acquitted of murder.

Only one thing I’d add to that:

It used to be that most people went into the workforce at 18. Nowadays, the Powers that Be are demanding college education for almost everything. That means we continue to not only postpone making people productive members of society, but we saddle them with the burden of student loan debt. Who is in a position to get married and raise a family with all of those things to deal with? A typical 25-year-old back then was in the work force seven years, probably saving up quite a bit, and is in far better position to raise a family to a modern 25-year-old who may not have a job (especially in this economy) or has one that pays worse than a factory job, has loans to pay off for a degree that is practically worthless, and has only been out of school for less than three years.

But our education system is world-class ever since we allowed collective bargaining, isn’t it?
