Flint, Michigan was the home of the United Auto Workers (and Buick). Rush almost got the history right (I lived and worked in Flink in thte 1980s). William Durant founded Buick and ulimately absorbed oldsmobile, pontiac, chevrolet and oldsmobile, but ultimately lost control of the company. By 1922, General Motors moved into its world headquarters in Detroit, where it remained into 1996, when GM moved to the Rennaisance center after Ford fled from the city of Detroit

Did you post the reference to Flint becuase of the guy who suggested the only sensible thing to do was to bulldoze Flint and “return it to nature”? I had a friend years ago — a newspaper editor and generally very liberal — who always said the only real solution to the problems of Camden, NJ, (the country’s poorest city and frequently named America’s most violent city) was to bulldoze everything and start over. I live just minutes (by car) from Camden and it has been an enormous drain on the Camden County and NJ state taxpayers since the 1960s. (Federal taxpayers, too, since Federal money gets passed through the state, into the county, and down to Camden City.) The last urban renewal plan for Camden was about eight years ago and was $750 million. Most of the money is gone and there are huge questions about where it went. Camden is literally a place where they keep some city financial records IN PENCIL. And they get away with the nonsense, decade after decade. Bulldozing what’s derelict (about 90 percent of the city) and selling off the land to private developers for manufacturing, office and retail use (along the main drag that links to a bridge into Philadelphia, PA) would make real sense.
I need to include more context :) Yes, Rush was talking about catching heat from the newspaper in Flint over pointing out the story about Dan Kildee wanting to bulldoze large portions of the city.
Derry Brownfield added a new “spin” to the story that struck me immediately as correct, albeit a bit conspiratorial. Derry has a syndicated show you probably have never heard – it’s targeted at Midwest farmers, mostly… he’s “Mr. Common Sense”. His belief is this is just a small part of a much larger plan to move the United States to the European model of housing – that the one family one house concept consumes too much energy and has created urban sprawl – and the Democrats/Socialists want to push people back into the cities and put them into government run high rise apartment buildings… and that this is part of a larger social agenda being pushed by the United Nations.
Once you’re living in government run housing, your “landlord” can tell you that you don’t have a right to own a gun, hold religious meetings in the meeting room, and they can enter your living area without a warrant to “search” for prohibited items, etc…
The NY Times happens to have a video piece on their web site today about how the former East Germany has lost almost half of its population, and those old high rise government apartment buildings have mostly been bulldozed and returned to nature. They’re running away from socialism, and we’re busy running towards it.
Dr. Zhivago Redux. How many people did he find living in HIS house after the Revolution? Gotta watch that movie again. David Lean was a genius.
