Chinese Radio International (CRI) is taking over the operations of KGBC on Galveston Island TX, an area that was devastated by Hurricane Ike. If you haven’t listened to it before, CRI is an English based propaganda service operated by the Chinese government, similar to the BBC’s North American Service heard on NPR. Its audience is not Chinese people living in America, it’s Americans who are interested in learning about China. It’s very much a “Soft Sell”, featuring mostly American Music, with minimal Chinese language programming or music. The Chinese language stuff is mostly like “Learning to speak Chinese”.

They don’t own the station, they’re just “renting” it 24 hours a day.
I remember you having a discussion about how foreign-based private equity firms can own radio stations as long as they don’t have voting power. So that raises this issue: if a foreign government forms a private equity firm, allows a few patsies based in the U.S. total voting power, and those patsies in turn offshore the station’s operations to the same private equity firm… is that legal? Technically, it seems yes, but doesn’t it violate the spirit of the regulations as they’re written?
Kind of the core of the issue is that in a global economy, pools of money don’t have a national identity. The notion of limits on foreign ownership seem pretty unenforceable, unless if you’re another country keeping US investors from owning land, factories, fee simple real estate… Or even in Hawaii, where somehow the equal protection clause doesn’t apply and non-native Hawaiians have significantly limited rights.
On a different angle, which is more dangerous to the United States – a totalitarian Communist regine that is inept and brutal to its own people or a somewhat free, somewhat capitalist China with a successful economy?
So, Obviously ,when Glenn Beck told us a little while back to start teaching our American Children to start learning Mandarin Chinese he wasn’t kidding ? Thank You Obamanation.
