Ed Schultz? I must be out of touch – I don’t know who that is. In any event – Pat Buchanan is usually a libertarian which makes the comment even more unique.
You’re not out of touch – Ed Schultz is an ultra-lib radio talk host whose audience is approximately five. He used to be on Air America and now is syndicated on a handful of low-power stations. In the Indianapolis area, he loses out to Michael Savage, Sean Hannity and one local drive-time talker who has had seven failed programs in the past.
I think a audience of five may be a little generous… :)
Ed Schultz is syndicated by Dial Global which acquired Jones Radio (as in Mother Jones magazine). While he was heard on many stations that carried Air America programming, he was never on Air America. That’s why he still has a radio show.
According to Mark Levin, Ed Schultz was once a conservative commentator in Nebraska. After a string of shows with lousy ratings, he re-invented himself as a progressive. He was subsequently picked up by Air America. When that failed, MSNBC picked him up (are you seeing a pattern here?) to host an opinion and commentary show. It is called the E.D. show–you may interpret that however you like. When I say “opinion and commentary” I mean it is like being stuck in an elevator with a belligerent drunk. The only people who listen to this show are hapless employees in the Microsoft cafeterias, where large, flat-screen TVs broadcast nothing but MSNBC all day. They’re already demoralized by layoffs–maybe this is a ploy to get them to quit and avoid even more.
Correction–Schultz was a sportscaster in Fargo, North Dakota.
He is also quoted as saying that when he started his radio commentary career, he “lined up with the Republicans because they were anti-tax, and I wanted to make a lot of money…” It seems that when he found the other side would offer him lots of money, his ideals went up for sale.
Ed Schultz was never syndicated by or worked for Air America.
That’s what I recall hearing on The Mark Levin Show–I might be mistaken. FWIW, Wikipedia’s article on Ed Schultz says that his show was “heard nationwide on Sirius Satellite Radio’s “Sirius Left” channel, and XM Radio’s Air America Radio channel.” However, the Wikipedia article on Air America doesn’t list his program.
That characterization is not accurate.
Ed Schultz is heard on a significant number of major market stations with significant coverage

He’s heard in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix.. and others that don’t stream
Unlike Air America (which Ed criticized openly as a bunch of inexperienced amateurs), Ed and Stephanie Miller had syndicated shows that predate Air America – and actually know how the radio business works.
Pat Buchanan is no libertarian. He’s with the Ron Paul types when it comes to war & national defense, but he’s pretty much a socialist when it comes to everything else. A ‘culturally conservative socialist,’ if there can really be such a thing.
I think the libertarians actually hijacked Pat Buchanan’s populism in the early 90s, de-emphasizing the drug decriminalization etc. and emphasizing the anti-welfare etc.
