14th and 15th amendments? Can I get a hint?

Christine O’Donnell’s latest “debate”

Not only doesn’t she understand the 1st Amendment and the context of Jefferson’s “Separation of church and state” letter, but she has no idea what the 14th and 15th amendments are about.

Jefferson was not the author of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. He was living in France in 1787 during the Constitutional Convention. His letter written a decade later is his opinion, not those of the people who wrote the Constitution. It’s possible to make that case, but only if you know a little history and read a little bit.

The 14th amendment is the post civil war change that essentially reframed the country as one with a strong central government with states as subserviant subdivisions rather than a federation of independent individual states with a very limited central government to provide only the enumerated powers. It also established the equal protection principle that is at the foundation of much of the modern era of legal decisions by the courts.

The U.S. Senate is not the minor leagues. She is way over her head – you don’t have to be a lawyer to understand the role of the law in government, but you do have to be more than a pretty face on TV. The purpose of the Senate is to create laws – that’s what a legislature does.

Since we are talking qualifications here, can we all agree the “community organiser” no longer qualifies for the Highest Office of the Land?
