Two things you may not know about Deepwater Horizon

Deepwater Horizon burning and sinking in the Gulf of Mexico wasn’t the only thing it ever did. In September 2009, Deepwater Horizon made national news when BP announced it had discovered a huge oil field at 35,000 feet under the Gulf of Mexico, the deepest well ever drilled in water.

The other thing you may not know is that Deepwater Horizon was not the drilling rig that started the ill-fated 18,000 foot Macondo well. The well was started by another drilling rig, but that rig was taken back to port for repairs after it was damaged in a hurricane. The Deepwater Horizon was moved over towards New Orleans in February 2010 to complete that well.

Drilling rigs and the blow out preventer are a paired set (the BOP has to be able to be carried on the rig and the control systems on the drilling platform must match the BOP’s control systems).

I’m betting there are more than two things I don’t know about Deepwater Horizon.

That sounds about right, From what I heard one Mud Company started, and another took over(I’m not naming them). So that adds up to the BOP mess up.
