Sports and the recession – those who follow things closely know that I”m not a big sports fan. I’m aware that the NFL has problems this season in that games are not selling out, so they have to enforce local blackouts on TV coverage. I’m wondering if crowds are down a lot for other sports (like baseball) and interest in streaming the sports might be more than it was a year ago….

I heard on ESPN’s Mike & Mike this morning that there are 2 blackouts this weekend in the NFL (Detroit & Oakland, and San Diego barely escaped being #3). It will take a currency collapse (which may happen) to stop the average American from their sports addictions.

Oakland: I’d put that team #1 on the list of teams to contract. They haven’t put a good team on the field since Gruden, their sharing of a West Coast market causes havoc with the NFL scheduling formula, and now they can’t even sell out the games. I guess now that the Niners are doing better, fans are more discerning on what they’ll spend money on.

Detroit, well, we know their problems: 0-16 and the collapse of the auto industry.

Yes. Particularly in basketball, there was talk of several teams (not just one or two, we’re talking about half the league) being on the verge of bankruptcy last season. Hockey isn’t in as bad shape, they have a solid cost-certainty plan. They have one bankrupt team (Phoenix), but they’ve had problems with the warm-weather markets for years and that’s no way related to the current recession.
