KSEV’s Edd Hendee is over in Afghanistan doing his show live. It might give some interesting insights on the problems there. I heard the generals are now telling President Obama they need 500,000 troops on the ground to “win”. Being President isn’t so easy after all, is it?

Jerry Doyle had a guest yesterday (I didn’t catch the name) talking about Obama new Afghanistan strategy implemented earlier this year. Since these changes our troops are required to minimize civilian casualties & deaths at all costs. Our troops are also required to put themselves in harms way –by leaving their bases and vehicles to travel by foot in the open. The results are what you would expect: the Taliban are winning, US & Allied troop deaths are surging, and the porous border between Pakistan & Afghanistan has become free flowing.
What a moronic strategy. Get our troops out now!
We need them staged in Afghanistan for when War Monger Obama invades Iran like he threatened today.
I heard that interview too, Foyle, and I think the guy’s name was Col. Anthony Schaffer. I thought Jerry asked excellent questions and I listened carefully to the answers, I,too, am coming to the conclusion there is no real strategy, no real “path to victory” and no way out of this mess. The colonel’s answers were complicated and jumped around a lot and filled with cliches and jargon I can remember hearing during Vietnam. (I’m 58 so I remember.) One of the things he said is that we will “never” leave Afghanistan. He’s glib and good at making his points but whenever I’ve heard him on any radio interviews I come away thinking I didn’t get any real answers to the reality there on the ground (corrupt central govt, the locals “playing” us, the drug situation (farmers growing poppies for the heroin trade), a culture so radically different from ours with no real “democratic” tradition, the mess in the tribal areas on the porous border with Pakistan, etc.) Does anyone else feel guilty that you sort of agree with Foyle (and me) yet you don’t know what to do as a citizen so you don’t do anything (except maybe talk to other Americans and find out they are thinking along the same lines — that this “war” is not winable and we’re spilling precious American blood in a lost cause?) Watched Band of Brothers recently and can’t imagine how we could have won in Europe if the Allies #1 priority was minimizing civilian casualties as they pushed off the beaches of Normandy and through to Berlin. How exactly would that have worked? And how many more GIs and Brits and Free French and Canadians and Poles would have died?
But Barack Obama believes that the only reason for lack of progress is that George Bush is stupid, and Barack is smart. More than one empire has dissipated its power trying to “control” this part of the world, going back at least to Alexander the Great. I’m guessing that world history taught in Indonesia might be a bit different than what is taught in Europe or the United States.
