If we think about the almost “non-events” at TMI, we should expect much, much worse damage at Fukushima. First, Fukushima is a BWR so the control rods go in from the bottom (much more “stuff” to melt/bend/fracture), there are many more fuel assemblies and there were actual explosions to destroy just about everything in the vicinity. I would expect the destruction to be substantially larger in scope.
A company that builds really big concrete pumps is loading up the biggest in the world – ironically currently used to build the MOX plant in South Carolina to send to Japan. It has a reach of 75 meters (about 20 stories). It is being sent on a Russian cargo plane – the only plane in the world big enough to carry it. They’re going to send along several others that are not so tall.
Initially they will join those pumping water like the one already on the site – but they’re thinking at some point it will switch over to concrete.
First ting to wemember … be vewwwwy carefuwl.
Or send a robot.
Really weird that Japan doesn’t seem to have any robots and needs to get them from the U.S. All this time, I thought Japan was a big fan of robots.
The Japanese prefer eeire looking, female robots that sing.
